Evaluation

Creating a questionnaire before and after i had produced my magazine has helped my to analyse how i could have improved where i went wrong and what bits i got right that woudl appeal to the audience.
I first decided that my magazine genre would be pop and would be aimed at younger girls, as i believe there arent many on the market directly aimed at that age focusung on that type of music.
Creating my mood board helped me think about what would be featured in teh magazine and how the artists would look. I decided i would us ethe stereotypical colour that symbloises 'girls' to make the magazine stand out and attract young girls.
My original main artists unfortunately couldnt go through with taking any more pictures for my front cover or article, however i learnt that i would need to make the pictures look more fun and funky for that age group and used this on creating the look for 'HeadCandy'. At first i struggled using photoshop to cut out my pictures and seperate them from the background, i found it hard to be so accurate about minor detail, however after practice it became easier and i was then able to add effect it hope to improve the proffessionalism of the pictures.
I took me quite a while also to create the fading pink effect on the front cover, i felt that teh colour would reflect the feminisim of the magazine. I made a spider diagram for coming up with names for the magazine, and i finally decided on the simple but shortest 'POP!' written in funky writing i think this name clearly gave away what genre the magazine was and was perfect for the age range.

Audience feedback!

To get audience feedback on the magazine i created i printed it off, and showed ten people who suited the age range to then fill in a questionnaire. This could help me evaluate whether my magazine was successful or not.
Questions asked:

Does the front cover of the magazine appeal to you?

Do you feel the price of the magazine appropriate?

What on the magazine stands uou to you?

What does the title of the magazine suggest to you?

What makes the magazine look proffessional, and what prevents it from looking proffesional?

How genuine does the front cover seem?

Does the contents page simly inform or does it manage to interest you in reading the rest of the magazine?

Does the article sound like a piece of journalism? If not, what bits dont sound right?

Does the article layout make you want to read it? If not, why not?

Article finished!

My article has been completed and i decide to go for a white plain background so that it was easier for young girls to read. Following the pink scheme i typed the article up in pink, and used a pink border to make it decorative. I used a 'fun' looking font for the headline 'HeadCandy' so it would stand out against the bright colour, yellow. I edited all my pictures, the main one using a blur and contrasting effect so they stood out. The two pictures of the girls in a pink background again have a contrast effect and i have used a pink colour to follow the scheme and make them look more 'girly'.

Contents page finished!

\

My contents page is completed and i have used photoshop to create a splash effect background and have used the same font as i originally did on the front cover. I have two pictures of 'Claudia' who is modeling the 'summer collection' inside the magazine. I used a contrast effect for the picture of 'HeadCandy' to make their faces stand out.

Front cover finished!

My completed page has two pictures one of the main models of the band 'HeadCandy' and one smaller picture of 'Claudia' who is also featured in the magazine. I have used a variety of fonts, and followed the main colour scheme of pink an blue.

Article written about 'HeadCandy'

The new `twin pop' duet have made all you young grils and boys go completely crazy!
We asked the pair - who dress head  to toe, nothing alike but still share the same beautiful face and physique, hpw they were dealing with life as a celeb?
Antonia: Cant get enough of it!
Beth: Like, wherever we o were always asked to sign autographs and be in pictures, its so cool!
Antonia: We are kinda used to all  the attention being identical twins, yet so different, we love every minute of it!
HeadCandy have had non-stop attention since releasing their debut album `Outspoken' with a variety of upbeat songs, anyone could sing and dance along to!
Where did the name of your album come from?
Antonia: We had a few ideas but we came up with this because `were finally getting a chance to have are say through song'
Beth: We're living the dream, the dream that so many girls and boys want and we're proving it can happen!
Young ladies have started to follow Antonia and Beth's style! Each having their own very different style they are becoming their very own fashion icons!
Being such big stars now, must add to the pressure?
Beth: I don’t know about `big stars' but we want to show girls that have the dream we have had since we were tiny, that it can be done!
The two-glam girlies who have said
`We dream to conquer the world' have certainly made a superb start!
They have been best friends, sisters and singing together all their lives, and have written most of their songs themselves about their experiences through childhood and growing up together! We hear you two both have very lucky fellas?
(both laugh)
Antonia: I don’t know whether I'd agree with that!
(Both laugh again)
Beth: Especially `cause we're always busy and mega grumpy half the  time!
So unfortunately for all those guys grueling over them, they aren't available!
Did you ever used to argue over boys?
Beth; We love this question `cause we actually didn't we just made boys argue over us!
Antonia: We have played many tricks when we were younger, we still laugh about them now!
Currently your rehearsing for your tour? How’s that?
Antonia: oh its so much fun, we just laugh all the time and we get on really well with everyone we work with!
Beth: We are always mega tired at the end of the day, but we just cannot wait for are very first tour, we are so excited! We just hope are fans enjoy it as much as we enjoy performing to them!
Did you have fun filming your hot new video?
Antonia: Yeah, like its something so different, the team we worked with, again were just great!! We wanted to make it funky and fresh.
Beth: Learning some of them dance moves was so hard but it was new, for us! We just hope are fans like it!
Has your dress sense always been so different?
Beth: Since we became ‘HeadCandy’ we have chosen outfits we wear carefully, we don’t wanna clash when we’re together, but we have are own style!
Antonia: I suppose it’s are hair colour and our big personalities that make us different!
Beth, your seen as more of a ‘Rock Chick’ and Antonia your seen as more of a ‘girly girl’, would you agree with that?
(Both look at each other)
Antonia; Yeah, I guess we’ve always been seen in that light, now more than ever!
Wht tips would you give young girls wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Beth: You can achieve your dream you just have to go out there and get it! Its hard work, it just takes ambition and will power!
With the girls being so generous, as we have learned at `POP' studios today, we have teamed up with them to give away two free tickets that two of you lucky ladies can win in this weeks competition, at the back of the mag! All you need to do is fill in a few details and tell us why you and a friend deserve to see `HeadCandy'in concert! These two lush ladies won't be going anywhere for a while, they are without a doubt `The Twins to watch' and make sure you grab next months mag where the girls have done a five page poster spread especially for you!

changes made so far to my magazine!

Unfortunately, the models i chose to originally feature in my magazine as the boy band 'Hyped!' were unable to continue taking pictures to be part of my magazine. Due to this problem, i have chosen two twin girls aged sixteen, and have chosen a new band name for them 'Head Candy'. In the pictures i have taken i have attempted to make them look older in order for them to be an inspiration to younger girls reading the magazine. They are wearing different outfits to show a variation of style, which would also attract young girls, i have taken photographs that are fun and that readers can relate too, for example there is a picture of the girls having a pillow fight, and outside in the garden. I have tried to ensure that the pictures are colourful and bright to fit with the theme of the magazine, and used different effects to make them this way.

I tried all pictures taken using different effects, to the ones outside in the garden i used the blur effect to create a cartoon look, which i thought would attract the younger readers with the pictures of the girls posing inside i added an effect to change the colour of the picture to a hint of pink. This i thought would follow the theme all thee magazine and paticularly appeal to girls, and the band image.

For my front cover i used a picture that was shot from thighs upwards:

I used the 'cutting' tool so that only the two girls were seen, and they would be placed on the front, on the pink background.

Pages so far!

My front cover so far is follwing the scheme of bright colours! with a pink backgound fading into white, this gives off immediately the impression of the magazine being very girly. I have one photograph so far on the left hand side of the magazine of Claudia who is modelling as the other 'popstar' featured in my magazine. She is in a white box to show she is seperated from thee main picture of 'Hyped'. I have taken more photos of the two boys I am using to create my band, unfortunately at the momtent I didnt think any were appropriate for the front cover, however i took one where chris is pretending to hit Lyall with his guitar, I will use this for my article page, to show that the boys are still young and having fun.
My front over also includes advertisements of what else is inside the magazine in hope to persuade readers to buy it.

My conetents page is still very bright, following the main colour pink, by text! There are two more small pictures of Claudia showing what will be inside. These two pictrues are very differnt than the one on the front cover as they are more fun and bright! I inclueded a letter from the editor (me) to set the tone of the target audience, I think it is more personal and sums up what the magazine is all about! To vary the colours, my background on the contents page is white, with pink and green paint splats again emphasising the fun and youth in the magazine.

photos taken so far!

Since my original ideas and photographs i had taken of the now only two boys who are part of the duet band, my ideas have changede and developed. Originally i took pictures of the boys in black and white outside, in several poses a lot of them quite serious, since evaluating these pictures and worked further on my magazine i have realised that these pictures are suited for an older audience and that they do not fit the criteria for the magazine.

This is one example of an origianl picture i had taken.

However these pictures helped me decide on how i want the band to appear and photographs to look like, to follow the look of the magazine i want them to be dressed in bright colours, and to attract the readers of a young age i am going to experiment the models in differnt poses having fun, such as on the park, playing on the swings etc. I am using band images such as Busted and Mcfly to help me.
From further development of my ideas i also changed the idea that that 'claudia' would be on teh main picture on the front cover of the magazine instead i am using he to model as another popstar in the magazine and have taken pictures of her, one more formally dressed up and others with her dressed casually in the sun. Again with claudia i decided i wanted the pictures to be birght and attrative, so she is in a blue dress, and as I decided the magazine is a summer issue, the dress is summer style and she is also wearing sun glasses on her head.

Lads all over England have started to follow Chris and Lyall.. With style! Being such a big inpsriation must add to the pressure?
Lyall: i dont know whether were an inspiration just yet but hopefully we can show young boys and girls that have the dream we have had since we were ten, that it can be done!
The boys who have said, 'we dream to conqour the world' have certainly made a superb start!
The young lads have been best friends and singing together since the age of ten and have written most of their songs themselves about their experiences together since childhood!

All you need to do is fill in a few details and tell us why you and a friend deserve to see 'Hyped' live in concert! These two specialities wont be going anywhere for a while, they are without a doubt the boy band to watch, and make sure you grab next months mag where the boys have done a ten paged poster special especially for you!

Planned photo shoots etc

I have decided that on my front cover there will be a close up shot of a young girl. You will not be able to see what she is wearing, her face will fill the front cover and the background also will, which i think will be a very light colour, either white or lilac! I am using my friend Claudia Fergurson to model for the pictures i will take for the front cover, although she is seventeen I intend to make her look a little younger, by doing subtle make-up, so that it reflects the age group the magazine is aged at.
Around the sides of the front cover, there will be smaller pictures of the 'band' featured in the magazine. I will take several pictures of the three boys i have chosen to create the band. They will be posing and looking at the camera for some, and on others will be playing instruments or singing, using teh mircophone and possibly a guitar and the drums as props. As the look of the band is very important, they have to appeal to young girls, i decided that there would wear shirts, skinny jeans and either boots or pumps on there feet. As they are a boy band i thought they should all be wearing the same colour, which i think will either by grey or black whilst the back drop behing them will be white or blue.

The name of my magazine

I decided my magazine name based on the audience questionnaire I created. I then made a spider diagram of different names I had come up with for the magazine. My final decision was made on the fact that i thought it should be simple and short and also should be straight to the point. To show that the magazine I decided that the name of the magazine which will be 'POP!' will be in flourecent pink and a significant font, also to direct this magazine at young girls and to show that it is fun the letter 'O' will be replaced with a love heart.

moodboard

The mood board I have created shows colours, celebrities and other pictures that fit the genre of my magazine. These will be the kind of things featured on the front cover and throughout the magazine, such as on the contents page. This mood board i believe sums up the kind of things young girls can expect from the magazine!

Equipment And Technologies To Be Used

Equipment and technology used is very important as every aspect helps create the quality of your magazine. The computer will be used to design the magazine with text using Indesign, we will also use high technology cameras to take pictures for images featured in my magazine and on the front cover, we will then use Photoshop to upload and edit pictures taken

Current music

As magazines are always focusing on what is the 'latest' it is important that music featured in the magazine is kept very current and the readers are seeing artistis they are interested in, to make them want to buy the magazine. I have researched the current, top 40 and see there is a lot of pop and dance in the charts at the moment, teh artists in teh charts are those that the audience are going to want to know about and read about, thefore as a magazine the editor should be able to interview, have pictures of those currently in teh charts!

Band images

Band images are very important when creating a pop magazine. They have to be someone that the audience admires,a dn can look up to. For example, Girls Aloud are a pop group that all girls can look up as they are attractive, young and creat pop music that is in the charts. The bands have to be recent and relevant, so that readers want to read about them and will be attracted to them if the band or solo artist is on the front cover.

Target audience research

To find out what young girls want to get out of reading a pop magzine i have created a questionnaire which will help me on my way to make the perfect magazine. The questionnaire will help me find out what type of music they like to listen to and what they expect to see inside and on the front cover.

Feedback 2.2.10

Good Amelia. You seem to be making reasonable progress with this. You need to complete the audience research to identify for certian the intended target audience etc. You must have all your research and planning complete by half term so that you can take all your photos over the holidays and be ready to start the production when we return.

Mrs A

Journalistic style and structure of an article

An article must fit the genre of the magazine, for example there must be some sort of link between the two and must be suitbale for the audience. So that the story is told understandly it must include detail of the person/people and locations etc. Sometimes pictures are used at the side to create a clearer picture for readers. The story is being told directly to the reader therfore th style of writing must fit the age group, therfore if the magazine is aimed at young people, inappropriate information would be appropriate but may be told from a younger point of view and then therfore th readers can relate to this. The article will be set out in columns as most are, with surrounding images to make it easy to follow, quotes written in bigger writing will catch the readers eye in hope for them to ontiue reading the article right to the end.

Unique selling point

As my product is aimed at young girls, it personally think it should be on sale in all news agents and shops such as whsmith and woolworths. I also think that my magazine would sell paticualrly well in 'claires accessoires' because as the shop is also used at young girls, it will attract the same age group.

Conventions Of A Music Magazine

To fit the genre of a music magazine the front cover must show what genre of music the magazine focuses on by having photographs of certain popstars/bands or revealing particular information that is going to attract readers. The front cover must attract the set target audience as well as the heading and colour making it obvious that it is a music magazine, this will create a certain style and attract either males or females, and a particular age range. Magazines use direct address when speaking to the audience and making the relationship with the readers is very important and knowing how the gender and age of the readers are most likely wanted to be addressed as. Music magazines use certain stars and celebrities to advertise their magazine and appeal to fans and are often used on the front page, for example a young girl may look up and admire a certain singer, seeing them on the front of a magazine would influence them to buy it. The front cover is what sells the magazine therefore it must be purposely designed to attract the audience, therefor it must use bright colours and large text so that it appears interesting and eye catching. Most magazines have a website which will usually be on the front cover to advertise reader to visit and the website which will be full of more information, gossip and pictures etc. The date and barcode will also be included on the front cover to identify whether the magazine is sole weekly or monthly, usually the magazine is cheaper if it is released weekly.
The conetents again should be bright and colourful, to be eye catching which should immediately persuade the reader to want toread more. Next to the column of what features in the magazine there are usually large and small images of celebrites featured in the magazine or clips from reallife stories etc. What features in the magazine are usually listed in paticular sections such as, gossip, or celeb updates.
My feature article that i hope to create will have a headline and subheading that will sum up the story immediately to grab the readers interest. Images will surround the article, one main one and a few smaller images that will reflect what the story is about. My article willbe spoken directly to the audience and will follow clearly, and depending on the genre of the aticle sland or swear words could possibly be used. Paticularly to get the audiences attention using quotes in bigger and bolder texts will make them want to read more if they see some interesting or important.

Preliminary Task

The college magazine taught me a lot about using Indesign and Photoshop. It prepared me for making my own magazine and how I would be using a variety of certain text and colour, additionally it gave me practice using a camera when taking pictures of the student in the background of the magazine which will help me when i come to take pictures for the 'popstars' in my magazine.
I think my preliminary task magazine was appealing as it used a variety of different text and the colour red to make the information stand out, and therefor appeal to readers. The use of my photograph i think was effective as it showed a student, from the college showing that its is a magazine for students. I have learnt the simplicity of designing a magazine however to improve on my own music magazine i will include more detail, for example i will use more pictures, and advertise more so, what is on the inside of the magazine i will use bright colours to attract readers.

Initial Ideas

I have decided to create my magazine for young girls, from ages 8-12. The magazine will be aimed at young girls only and will be a pop magazine as I believe there is gap in the market. It will include and focus on pop music including what is in the charts and additional interviews, pictures and activities that i think will appeal to young girls.
